Facts About At-Risk Youth in New York City

  • Ten percent of all New York City households are headed by just a single mother – but out of all households below the poverty line, 39% are headed by a single mother. 
  • In 2008, the dropout rate in America was 10%, while in New York City 37% of the more than 1.1 million youth in the NYC public school system will drop out. 
  • Only 21% of NYC 8th graders can read proficiently, and only 26% can do math proficiently.  
  • Nearly 40% of youth in the Bronx aged 5-17 live in an impoverished family, and 30% in Brooklyn.
