Emergency Update from The Bowery Mission

Hurricane Irene headed to New York City

Dear friends of The Bowery Mission,

We are so grateful for your concern and prayers as we prepare for Hurricane Irene's arrival at New York City.

All our sites (The Bowery Mission, our Transitional Center and our Women's Center) have plans in place and are ready for the potential power outages the hurricane may cause. The Bowery Mission Transitional Center in lower Manhattan is located in a Hurricane Evacuation Zone B, which means evacuation is not currently mandatory. Nevertheless, The Bowery Mission is ready to offer safe shelter to all the residents at the Transitional Center in case the situation requires them to leave the site.

We are offering additional overnight emergency shelter in our site at 227 Bowery for any homeless men, women or children seeking a safe place to stay as Hurricane Irene passes through the City. Emergency shelter is also open to our neighbors who were forced to evacuate their homes. For more shelter locations in the City, please visit our Hurricane Irene Emergency Shelter page.

In preparation to potential power outages and increased need for assistance, we have prepared over 2,000 meals for the homeless community and our neighbors in need, more than double what we would usually prepare at this time of the year.

We ask that you continue to keep us and the New York City community in your prayers. Thank you so much for your continued support of The Bowery Mission, which enables us to be ready and respond in these emergencies.

We will continue to provide updates on the happenings at the Mission through the passing of Hurricane Irene through Twitter and Facebook
