President's Update - November 2011

A Family With Skin On
An old joke tells of a little girl seeking help to combat the monsters she knew lived under her bed at night. Trying to comfort the little girl, her mother reminded her, "God is with you." The little girl thought for a moment, then said, "Can you send someone with skin on?"
The holiday season is the loneliest and most painful time of year for men and women struggling with addictions and homelessness. Christmas reminds them of happier lives they once had — or in many cases, lives they never had. Many of them are people who can't go home, or who have no one left who really wants to see them. They are people who need a family with skin on.
That's why The Bowery Mission works so hard every holiday season to reach out to them and tangibly love them. We embrace them with family love as we celebrate Someone who came to earth so we no longer have to be estranged from God or other people.
Ours is a big family — a family much larger than the men and women who live here. Because you are part of this family too. You are the skin God sent to love these precious souls.
Gratefully,
