Sonia & Christopher, The Bowery Mission

As a single mom, Sonia works hard to give her two boys, Christopher and Christian, the best life possible. Every day, she sacrifices her own needs for the sake of her children.

But working two jobs meant less time as a family—or more time when her boys were without positive supervision. As the months passed, Sonia saw them drifting into trouble, and she was determined to win them back.

Sonia began searching for a safe, affordable place where her boys could be around healthy role models after school.

When Sonia saw a sign in the neighborhood about The Bowery Mission's Mont Lawn City Camp, she knew it was an answer to prayer...

"My boys are around people who are welcoming and take care of them."

Sonia first brought her two sons to Mont Lawn City Camp and participated in our family activities. "I've been able to connect with my boys," Sonia shares, "And they are around people who are welcoming and take care of them."

Christopher, Sonia's oldest son, was hesitant at first, but after two years of camp experiences, he wants to be a mentor!

"After going to Mont Lawn Summer Camp and being in the City Camp program, I am definitely changed," Christopher says. "Through the arts program, doing music and being around strong role models, I feel energized. I have more joy. I also like to help the younger kids and it feels good."

"There is always somebody to talk to if I'm sad," Christopher adds. "And it's helped me bond with my brother and grow with my mom. It's also taught me more about God and how to get through tough times."

With the parenting support Sonia has received, she feels like her family has new life going forward! Thank you for giving hope and guidance to families—like Sonia and Christopher's—this Easter and all year long.
