Good Samaritans Don't Walk By

Red Door Newsletter - April 2011

Cheri, a Bowery Mission volunteer, found Roosevelt sitting in the rain. Confined to a wheelchair, he was soaked to the bone and half-frozen. And he smelled of alcohol.
“Why would you care for me?” Roosevelt asked. His words broke Cheri’s heart. She held Roosevelt’s hand as she wiped away his tears.
Cheri was one of more than 1,400 volunteers who carried out the Bowery Mission-led campaign Don’t Walk By, this winter. These Good Samaritans canvassed every block in Manhattan, offering each homeless man and woman they encountered a hot meal, safe shelter, and an invitation for a fresh start <link to donation page>.
During the Don’t Walk By campaign …
Volunteers met with 900 homeless people.
542 of these folks, including Roosevelt, were transported to participating churches for a hot meal, new clothes, and prayer.
161 people were assessed by medical and counseling teams.
83 men and women were transported to The Bowery Mission and partner organizations.
4 people were admitted to local hospitals.
Undertakings like this are only possible through the generous support of friends like you. Thank you for standing with The Bowery Mission to share the love of God <link to donation page> with “the least of these.”
