"When Meals Lead to Miracles" - Brian's Story
Red Door Newsletter - April 2011
Brian was fresh out of prison, with $15 in his pocket and nowhere to go.
He was sitting on a bench in Central Park, pondering the next chapter of his life. That’s when a police officer approached and struck up a conversation. After hearing Brian’s story, the officer told him about The Bowery Mission and urged him to give it a try. The officer even bought Brian a metro card so he could make his way here.
Brian arrived at the Mission, thinking maybe he could get a hot meal <link to donation page>. Nothing more. But what started as a meal led to a life transformation that is nothing short of a miracle.
“I never intended to stay at The Bowery Mission,” Brian said. “I was going to stay there maybe a week or so, then move on. My plan was to go back to selling drugs.”
That plan quickly began to change. As we poured out God’s love, Brian discovered that God had so much more in store for him. And he couldn’t wait to start living again.
When our staff learned that Brian had a deep desire to return to the restaurant business (and that he had graduated from Le Cordon Bleu) we connected him with a private Christian school in Queens that was in desperate need of a chef.
Today, Brian is working hard and loving his new life. And he is actively involved with the Mission, reaching out to help others who need help and hope <link to donation page>.
“I used not to care what people thought about me,” he says. “But now I want people to see me as a good person.”
Thank you for opening your heart to people like Brian — and for making miracles happen every day at The Bowery Mission.
