Helping Our Homeless Friends Beat the Heat

Red Door E-Newsletter - August 2011

Matt Krivich, Director of Operations at The Bowery Mission, wants to educate others about the urgent needs homeless people face in the summer.
“Just because it is summer and people are going to the beach doesn’t mean it is any safer for people who are living on the streets,” he said.
In addition to overheating, homeless people are prone to dehydration and sunburn. Many simply want a cool place to sit or a shower.
“We set up outreaches in the city where we bring beverages, baseball caps and sunglasses local stores have donated from their lost & found … whatever we have at the time. We also give folks an opportunity to come back on Fridays for showers and to change clothing,” he said.
But meeting the increased need during summer requires extra resources. As we continue to experience high temperatures through September, here are some critically needed items:
Water bottles
Sunglasses or hats
Long-sleeved t-shirts to prevent sunburn
Towels for use in the showers
Shoes to replace ones worn-out from walking
“I want people to be aware of the needs of the homeless. The seasons change how people operate and their ability to live safely. We hope to raise awareness. And if you don’t know, just ask what you can do to help.”
Your generous support<Link> helps us purchase supplies to help the homeless during the summer. We are also grateful for the donation of new or gently used items to help stock our clothing room.
