Another Successful Summer at Camp

Red Door E-Newsletter - August 2011

More than 1,100 young lives were forever changed this summer. Kids from the toughest neighborhoods in New York came together at Mont Lawn Camp, where life lessons are taught along with every new challenge and adventure.
Rich Sylvester, Camp Director, said, “It’s amazing the transformation that takes place from when they first get here to when they leave. I had kids get off the bus with absolutely no luggage—only wearing the clothes they have. So I get to give them toiletries, towels, bathing suits … and they leave with a piece of luggage that is filled with clothing.
I have kids who show up with impacted molars or broken teeth and in severe pain. I take them to a local dentist and get their teeth fixed. I have kids who show up with medical needs that have been untouched and undiagnosed. I got to take a kid to have his broken arm set because, for some reason, his mom was unable to get him to a doctor in the city.
What we get to do is so cool. I mean it every time I say it. My wife and I have the coolest jobs in the U.S. at a free camp to meet kids’ physical, spiritual, emotional and intellectual needs. Even if it is just for a week, it changes their life. And I wouldn’t want to do anything else.”
