Delivering Hope to the Hungry
Red Door E-Newsletter - July 2011
One in five New Yorkers doesn't know where their next meal will come from. The Bowery Mission’s Outreach Program delivers food and shares the message of God’s love with the homeless and families in need.
Six days a week, a large van loaded with fresh vegetables, breads, pastries, hot soup and more deploys to neighborhoods with concentrated need in Manhattan and Brooklyn.
Stephen*, a former drug addict who is now one of our drivers, says bringing food to the city’s hungry “makes you smile and feel good because you are doing something for the people who really need it . . . they are so grateful.”
Many of these people have no way to get to the Mission. Without the Outreach Program, they might not eat.
That’s why this program represents more than just food. For many hungry neighbors, we’re delivering hope — hope they need to keep going, to survive another week.
Putting this all together is a big undertaking! We rely on hundreds of volunteers and many generous friends like you to provide food, pack grocery bags, cook and serve meals.
The end result is a blessing we can all be proud of:
Each month, 2,800 grocery bags and nearly 3,000 meals are served to homeless and hungry men and women.
