Fired for Speaking Up
Red Door Newsletter - June 2011
Ida* was not afraid to work hard. She was a housekeeper for a large hotel chain.
The problem was that she couldn’t make enough money to get by. She hadn’t had a vacation in three years. And perhaps most hurtful for her, she didn’t have any money to send to her parents, who were in need and in a foreign country.
But when Ida asked her boss for a raise, he fired her. It was the worst possible outcome for her.
“I had no friends, no money, no family close by,” she remembers. “I had nothing. I started crying. For the first time, I was basically alone.”
Alone, that is, until she discovered The Bowery Mission.
The Mission offered her food, shelter, classes and Bible study. Most importantly, it taught her to depend on God, even when things looked bleak.
Today Ida is looking for a job that will allow her to move into a place of her own. But thanks to the Mission, and friends like you, she has hope. “I see how my life has changed,” she says. “God has given me proof of that.”
