180° Transformation

Avis was the kind of woman who wore body armor. Not a physical armor that would stop bullets, but the kind of armor that protected her from feeling … or so she thought.
“I couldn’t cry. I’d talk with my hands,” she explains, mean that she would fight you if you showed any hint of disrespect. “I was the kind of woman who could spend all week with you, but the minute you fell asleep, I’d take your wallet. And then when you woke up I’d help you look for it.”
In light of the kind of person Avis was, the transformation she experienced at The Bowery Mission is nothing short of remarkable.
“This place – I’m just shocked – they kept giving and giving,” she says, “until I finally listened and learned to give, too. God showed me I can be weak – but he’d take care of me.”
“I think of the friends I knew back in the day, and I just wish I could bring them here,” Avis says. “This is a place where you can change. There’s no door that God can’t open. I know that now.”
