Kids With A Promise Young Scholars
Kids With A Promise's Young Scholars is dedicated to unlocking the vast potential in at risk youth, by providing them with scholarships to select private schools and supporting their academic achievement with mentoring, tutoring, family retreats, summer camp and projects that develop their interests and knowledge.
Quality education is one of the most important factors in helping youth break the cycle of poverty. Thousands of youth in New York City suffer under a defective educational system that is stunting their opportunity to fully realize the potential God has in store for them.
Young Scholars along with Mont Lawn Camp are the Kids With A Promise programs for kids age 6-12 that connect youth to God, a caring adult, positive peer group and quality education. Kids With A Promise also includes Leadership Academy, Leadership Hill and Counselor in Training for 13-18 year olds. The long-term goals of these program are to help at risk youth become academically accomplished, morally grounded leaders in their schools, families and communities as well as prepare them for and create opportunities to attend college. Young Scholars is a three year pilot program launched in the 2009-2010 school year that currently works with 18 young people identified as at-risk youth. We provide to each Scholar a year-round package of services:
- Opportunity to attend a quality private Christian school through a full scholarship. We have established partnerships with two schools – Evangel Christian School in Long Island City, and Manhattan Christian Academy in Inwood.
- Academic support through constant monitoring of each Scholar's grades and progress. We work with teachers to design intervention strategies and offer volunteer tutors if needed.
- Connection to a caring adult who is both a mentor and an academic partner. Together, they complete projects that cultivate the interests and gifting of the Scholar.
- Connection to a peer group of other Scholars who meet six times annually, celebrating accomplishments, presenting special projects, and building friendship.
- Retreats and excursions that include a two-week, customized summer experience at Mont Lawn Camp and a winter retreat for the whole family.
