Mont Lawn City Camp Programs
The Bowery Mission gives a positive first chance to children at risk of falling behind—helping to prevent the cycle of poverty. Mont Lawn City Camp is the core of that strategy. By broadening children's horizons and changing their life direction—through year-round enrichment activities, mentoring, and practical help for their families—we set them on the path towards academic, social and emotional success.
Our programs are located in the South Bronx and East Harlem, two of New York City's highest-risk neighborhoods for youth success. These children live in environments stressed by gangs, drug use, absentee parents, inadequate education, and low personal expectations. Many schools have cut music, art, and sports programs. The combined effect leaves youth with few opportunities to build artistic, athletic, and social and emotional skills.
City Camp serves over 250 children each year in a caring community environment with a curriculum led by trained staff and volunteer mentors.
The programs include:
A variety of athletic activities and teams, including soccer, basketball and track
READING & WRITING
Book reading and discussion, reading comprehension, creative writing and more
Our leadership development program, Leadership Academy, matches volunteer mentors with students
Classes on healthy eating, grocery shopping, recipes and making meals
Classes including painting, collage, drawing and theater
City Camp activities culminate in a summer experience for over 1,100 youth at our 120-year-old camp in Pennsylvania's Poconos region, Mont Lawn Summer Camp.
