Pamela's Restoration
A Story You Made Possible
My name is Pamela, and The Bowery Mission got me off the streets and off drugs. It was a vicious cycle that began when I dropped out of school and was kicked out of my home.
I was homeless for about 15 years, doing crack cocaine and drinking. Finally, after being high and awake for three days straight I hit rock bottom. I knew I needed a change. I started thinking about my family and remembered that my sister was in a recovery program at The Bowery Mission Women's Center.
I called to see if I could enter the program, but they were at capacity. I kept calling every day to see if a bed had opened up. Finally, my persistence paid off when I was told to come to the Women's Center and they would buy a new bed and make room for me.
The program was exactly what I needed. It taught me discipline which helped me conquer my addictions and become a stronger woman. A few years later, I met a wonderful man named Eugene, another graduate of the Mission, and we married in 1998.
After graduating from the Women's Center I worked as a church secretary for five years. I later went on to get my Masters of Divinity from New York Theological Seminary in 2007, and am now pursuing my doctorate.
Thanks to The Bowery Mission, I have obtained a great source of resilience and a wonderful life. Today, I have a heart for the hopeless, something I didn't have before.
