Mentoring Youth

Mont Lawn Camp CounselorThere are a number of opportunities to mentor and tutor 6-12 year olds who are part of the Young Scholars program and to mentor 12-18 year olds who are a part of the Leadership Academy.  A caring adult who is willing to positively share faith and values can make all the difference in helping a child overcome barriers and realize his or her full potential.

Young Scholars - Mentoring

Support our elementary students as they work to grow academically and spiritually. Christian mentors are paired with one of our Young Scholars of the same gender for one academic year.  They meet 3-4 times a month to work on a project that develops the interests of the young Scholar.  Mentors attend 6 Saturday morning group sessions during the year.  Mentors also attend the winter weekend family retreat at Mont Lawn Camp in Pennsylvania.  Finally, mentors should pray consistently for their Young Scholars.

Young Scholars – Tutoring

The Bowery Mission Young ScholarsSome of our Young Scholars need supplemental academic assistance.  Volunteer tutors provide free tutoring for these students either at their schools or in their homes.  The volunteer tutor works with one Young Scholar 2-3 times per week for 6 weeks.  Prior to beginning, tutors will receive an orientation.  Once tutoring sessions have commenced, tutors are asked to provide weekly progress reports to the Young Scholars Program Manager.

Leadership Academy - Mentoring

Leadership Academy is a Christian mentoring program for at-risk youth approximately 13-16 years old.  Mentors meet three Saturdays a month from 9am-12pm – twice with their 3-4 protégés and once with their fellow mentors and staff.  Mentors lead small group discussions, share life and pray with their teens, maintaining weekday contact by phone or email.
