James' Restoration: A Story You Made Possible
My name is James, and my life was transformed at The Bowery Mission.
I never would have thought that a meal ticket to the Mission could change my life but that’s exactly what happened.
I was homeless, hungry, lonely and overwhelmed by an addiction to crack cocaine. I had no idea how to get out of the hole I had dug for myself. It was my darkest hour.
One night, while sleeping on the subway, I was awakened by a woman who gave me a meal ticket for The Bowery Mission.
I showed up at the Mission for a meal. But I quickly learned that little ticket meant so much more than food. For me, it was the first step toward a new beginning — a fresh start. I joined the residential recovery program, humbled myself, and began to learn to serve others.
The staff at The Bowery Mission became like family to me and helped me overcome my addiction. After graduating from the program, they hired me as the receptionist. Little did I know that was the beginning of a rewarding, life-changing career. Today, over 30 years later, I am the Director of Outreach.
The Bowery Mission gave me an opportunity to restore myself, and it all started with a meal ticket. Now I want to be like family to those who come to our program because I know what it is like. I want to show them that if I could do it, then anybody can.
