Wesley's Restoration: A Story You Made Possible
My name is Wesley and my life was transformed at The Bowery Mission.
I grew up hearing stories about the Bible from my grandmother. But as I got older, I strayed away from God. I was selling and doing drugs and drinking.
Finally, my body couldn't take it anymore. I developed cirrhosis of the liver and one of my kidneys shut down – I've had 12 surgeries to fix it.
In 2009, a friend told me about The Bowery Mission. I came here to seek help but only stayed two months before I had to leave for another kidney surgery.
I kept bouncing from crisis center to crisis center. I tried not to stay on the streets. Then I checked myself into detox. When I finished, I remembered The Bowery Mission and called to ask if I could come here. They welcomed me back with open arms!
Now I’ve been clean and sober for one year and four months, and I feel great. Thanks to guidance from the chaplains and counselors at the Mission, I have joy in my life like never before. I even have a job as a cook. I plan on getting my chef’s license and eventually I would like to own my own catering business. I love to see the smile on people’s faces when I cook.
While in the residential recovery program, I've come to realize my purpose in life is to help others. I’m thankful The Bowery Mission has given me the opportunity to realize that.
