Edward's Restoration: A Story You Made Possible
"The Mission gave me the opportunity to truly change my life."
My name is Edward, and The Bowery Mission helped me end an 18-year cycle of drugs and jail.
I'm from New York, but I grew up in Puerto Rico. Believe it or not, I was raised in a Christian home. But when I turned 18, I decided to live life my way. That meant wild living, like the prodigal son.
After several years of fast living, I slowed down enough to marry. My wife and I had a daughter, but we divorced a few months after her birth — and I didn't see her for over 20 years. That left a hole in my heart that led me back to drugs.
For two decades, I was lost. Sixteen times — yes, 16 — I went to jail for drug offenses. I was so tired of the life, but I couldn't stop.
During my last incarceration, a friend recommended The Bowery Mission's residential recovery program to break my addiction. So when I got out, I left Puerto Rico and came straight here.
I was determined. Whatever task they gave me — unloading trucks, cooking food, you name it — I worked hard to prove myself. The counselors and a guy in the kitchen named Herb all showed me such kindness. They taught me God's grace too, and I soaked it up.
When I graduated, they made me a mission trainee. Shortly after, I was offered a full-time position. I joyfully accepted!
Today, I'm in charge of security at the Mission. I also help ensure our homeless guests — our community — find everything they need here. I'm so grateful God led me here to heal and serve. The Bowery Mission gave me the opportunity to truly change my life.
