Domingo's Restoration: A Story You Made Possible
"God says to come to Him as you are and The Bowery Mission stands for that."
My name is Domingo. I was once homeless, addicted to drugs, and estranged from my family. Then one night I cried out to God: "Help me!" The Bowery Mission was God's answer.
I had tried other recovery programs, but they just focused on the physical and mental aspects of addiction. Something was definitely missing. And each time, I ended up back on the streets, back to my old ways.
When I came to The Bowery Mission, I could tell things were going to be different. It was so much more than detox. Through the classes, I was reintroduced to God and began to rediscover my dignity and worth as a person. I also began to understand that I have something to give back to my community, that I can be a contributing member. That was huge for me.
God says to come to Him as you are and The Bowery Mission stands for that. Everyone here gets the help they need: food, clothing, medical attention, help with public benefits, or anything else.
With guidance from the Mission staff, I'm clean and have started to reconcile with my family. And since graduating from the recovery program, I have been working as a carpenter to help build the Mission's new Women's Center in Harlem. What a blessing to use my skills to help others have a second chance in life.
I thank The Bowery Mission for helping me transform my life.
