Gerald's Restoration: A Story You Made Possible
"A miracle has happened in my life, and I owe it to God and The Bowery Mission."
My name is Gerald, and I'm becoming the man God created me to be at The Bowery Mission.
My parents tried to show me how to live when I was young, but I rejected them. At 16, I chose the streets instead.
It wasn't long before I had a daughter I couldn't support and an arrest record. I sold heroin to an undercover detective and went to jail for four years. When I got out, I went right back to my old drug life.
This continued for years, until I fell all the way to my rock bottom — I was utterly alone, shooting heroin and living under the Williamsburg Bridge. All my friends were gone, even my family abandoned me. I had no one left to turn to for help. Finally, on August 12, 2011, I walked into The Bowery Mission.
Thanks to the Mission, I was able to overcome my addiction. In the Career Center, I learned valuable computer and communication skills that I will take with me for the rest of my life. But best of all, I'm learning to be the man God created me to be: clean and sober, responsible, and living with integrity.
Through this process, I've also reconciled with my daughter. She's 32, and she has forgiven me for my past.
A miracle has happened in my life, and I owe it to God and The Bowery Mission.
