Robert's Restoration: A Story You Made Possible
"I’m grateful to The Bowery Mission for restoring my hope."
My name is Robert, and when I was at rock bottom, The Bowery Mission picked me up and transformed my life. How I got here, though, is a story twenty years in the making . . .
In 1991, I emigrated from Hungary to New York. America provides the best opportunities for work and freedom, and I was grateful to come.
I worked hard too — here in the city, then Texas, and lastly in Hawaii on a cruise liner. That may sound fun, but the work is grueling. You wake up every day at 4:00 a.m., work until late night, and do it seven days a week for months on end. It wore my spirit down, and I turned to alcohol to cope. In the end, after five years of this, I had to quit.
I felt broken and needed a fresh start, so I returned to New York. I found a room on 145th Street and started job hunting. But in this economy, I found nothing.
In two months, I was out of money and facing the streets.
I came to The Bowery Mission, and this . . . this was the program for me. It wasn’t just the food and shelter, either. I came to know God here. I have no family here in the States, but the people here at the Mission became like family.
As my spirit healed, I took advantage of the Career Center — earning my GED, then going back to school for computers. After receiving my A+ certification, I secured a great job at a technology company on Long Island. One month later, I got a second job as a doorman.
Now my American Dream is back on track. I’ve even begun volunteering to teach other immigrants English, so they can reach their dreams.
I’m grateful to The Bowery Mission for saving my life and restoring my hope.
