Cebert's Restoration: A Story You Made Possible
“The Mission taught me that life is all about serving others.”
My name is Cebert and the care I received at The Bowery Mission gave me new purpose in life.
I grew up on a farmland in Jamaica with a loving family, but sometimes we struggled to keep food on the table. After I finished college and received a degree in computer technology, I decided to start my own business. But two years later, my business went south and I lost everything.
I wanted a new start so I moved to Barbados, where I met an American girl and quickly fell in love. I wanted to have a family and get married. Before long I moved to New York with her. Shortly after, our relationship turned sour and I found myself on the streets, broke and alone.
I had no choice but to turn to homeless shelters for refuge. It was a really hard time for me because I never thought I would be a homeless person. I had been successful. I had an education!
When I arrived at The Bowery Mission, I was blown away by the compassionate care I received from the staff and residents. I no longer had to worry about food or a place to sleep. I could reflect on my life and begin the healing process. After I graduated from the recovery program, the Mission hired me to teach men computer skills.
Today, I am the Career Center Supervisor and help men who are in need of a second chance – just like I was six years ago – reach their full potential.
The Bowery Mission taught me that life is all about serving others, and that’s what I want to do the rest of my life.
