Ana Lucia's Restoration: A Story You Made Possible
"I am grateful for the new direction and purpose the Mission gave me."
My name is Ana Lucia. At one time, my life looked like a big success. I was a model and professional dancer in Europe. I travelled all over the world and all my expenses were paid for. I always juggled at least two boyfriends. I was young and independent.
But there was another side to me. My mother abandoned me as a child, so I learned early how to take care of myself. The problem was, I had no goals or direction. I was lost. I didn’t set out to be a model or dancer. People thought I was pretty and it just happened.
Then I fell in love with a man who broke my heart. I was so devastated, I turned to cocaine to kill the pain. I never slept, and I lived like a zombie. By 2005, I lost everything — including a place to live. But I still couldn’t stop using drugs.
Then one day, something powerful happened. Something inside me made me put the drugs down. It’s like God was literally guiding my steps. All the way to The Bowery Mission Women's Center.
When I woke up the next morning, I felt lighter and happier than I had ever felt. Over the next several months, mentors and counselors taught me how to make God the cornerstone of my life, and how to stay close to Him. They also gave me structure and the direction I needed to live a better life.
I graduated from the Mission in 2006, and today, I am a top international sales associate with Swatch, selling more than $1 million in merchandise every year. But none of that really matters. What matters most to me today is serving God and supporting The Bowery Mission as a volunteer and a donor for the rest of my life. I am deeply grateful for the new direction and purpose The Bowery Mission gave me.
