Okay, got it!

John found his way home — thanks to you!

"Thanks to The Bowery Mission, I've finally found my way home."

JohnMy name is John and without the Mission, I’d still be lost.

I grew up in a loving family. Through high school, I was a good student and athlete. But that all changed when I headed to college at the height of the hippie drug culture. I started smoking pot and drinking and eventually tried LSD. I partied so much that I dropped out of school.

For 17 years, I was caught in a turbulent cycle of abusing drugs, hustling people at bars, entering rehab and relapsing. I even went into the Navy to try to get my head on straight. But I always found a way to use drugs again. After a discharge from the Navy, I went back home to live with my parents. They wanted to give me a second chance, but I didn’t respect their help. I kept using, so they practiced tough love and kicked me out.

With no job and no place to live, I was desperate and headed to a halfway house. I met someone who told me about The Bowery Mission. I didn’t have anything left to lose, so I decided to go.

When I walked through the Mission’s red doors, I was convinced God wouldn’t want anything to do with me. But I met other guys who were in the same boat, fighting to overcome past struggles together and keep each other on the straight and narrow. The encouragement of counselors and music from chapel services really blessed me.

At the Mission, I got a much-needed fresh start. After wasting so many years doing things my way, I turned my life over to God. Today, 27 years later, I’m sober and married with four beautiful daughters. I enjoy working hard to help others, including teaching history at a high school. God has been able to use me in ways I never dreamed possible.

When my parents see me today, they are thankful that The Bowery Mission was there to help me. They’ve forgiven me and welcomed me back into the family, just like the prodigal son. Thanks to The Bowery Mission, I’ve finally found my way home.
