{"id":2344,"date":"2024-10-24T18:49:10","date_gmt":"2024-10-24T18:49:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bowery.org\/updates\/?p=2344"},"modified":"2026-01-21T19:14:55","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T19:14:55","slug":"kellys-hope-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bowery.org\/updates\/2024\/10\/kellys-hope-story\/","title":{"rendered":"Kelly\u2019s hope story: After hitting rock bottom, finding help and hope"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In the depths of her depression, the kindness of friends like you turned things around.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Kelly\u2019s relationship with her mom was one for the ages. \u201cShe was my best friend,\u201d Kelly says. \u201cI loved her very much. We were so close.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When her mother\u2019s health began declining several years ago, Kelly was right at her side. \u201cI would come home from work and take care of her,\u201d she explains. \u201cI\u2019d make sure she took her meds. I\u2019d feed her, bathe her, help her get dressed. I took care of her all the way to the end.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The end came in August 2021, due to a heart attack. \u201cIt hurts,\u201d she says, \u201cbut I know she\u2019s in heaven. I know she\u2019s not suffering anymore.\u201d Her mom\u2019s suffering had ended. But Kelly\u2019s was just beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hitting rock bottom<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI hit rock bottom when my mom died,\u201d she remembers. \u201cI got depressed.\u201d Worse, her brother and his aunt who lived in the same apartment began to turn on her, with physical and verbal abuse. Kelly left because \u201cit wasn\u2019t safe for me there anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kelly was worried she might have to sleep on the streets, but it never came to that. Thanks to the loving support of friends like you, she eventually found her way to The Bowery Mission. <strong>She walked through our Red Doors and almost immediately felt a sense of peace, of hope. \u201cI feel safe here,\u201d she says. \u201cI feel at home.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kelly was soon in the Mission\u2019s Residential Program, where she\u2019s making progress toward her goal of living independently again. \u201cThis program helps me a whole lot,\u201d she shares. \u201cMy life is easier. I\u2019m working. I\u2019m doing my chores. I\u2019ve been going to chapel and Bible study. And I\u2019ve made a lot of friends.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bowery.org\/updates\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/2410BEN_K-grad_1200.jpg\" alt=\"Kelly with staff at graduation holding her certificate\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\" style=\"font-size:14px\">Kelly (2nd from left) with The Bowery Mission staff, receiving the \u201cFostering Community Award\u201d at our Residential Program Graduation. The award honors people who regularly display acts of kindness and service towards others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:13px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>She has continued her part-time job with the NYPD as a school crossing guard, a position she\u2019s held for 14 years. She hopes to find a second job so she can buy some furniture and a TV, in preparation for moving into her own place. Kelly is also thankful that The Bowery Mission arranged for her to get into a speech therapy program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grateful &amp; blessed<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This Thanksgiving season, Kelly and her family are grateful that she is in a safe place. <strong>\u201cI\u2019m blessed,\u201d she says. \u201cI thank God I have a roof over my head, and I\u2019m glad I\u2019m not on the streets.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her favorite Scripture is Psalm 23, particularly the part about how God protected David in \u201cthe valley of the shadow of death.\u201d \u201cI feel like I\u2019ve walked through the valley,\u201d Kelly shares. \u201cI know God is my Father, Jesus is my brother, and the Holy Ghost is my keeper and my comforter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-style-large is-style-plain has-normal-font-size is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cI\u2019m thankful for The Bowery Mission caring for me.
