{"id":2713,"date":"2026-07-31T17:39:02","date_gmt":"2026-07-31T17:39:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bowery.org\/updates\/?p=2713"},"modified":"2026-08-02T17:47:07","modified_gmt":"2026-08-02T17:47:07","slug":"sidequas-hope-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bowery.org\/updates\/2026\/07\/sidequas-hope-story\/","title":{"rendered":"Sidequa\u2019s hope story: \u201cYou would never think that it can happen to you.\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The most difficult time of Sidequa\u2019s life became the beginning of something she hadn\u2019t expected \u2014 stillness, patience and a renewal of her faith.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sidequa\u2019s childhood in the Bronx was marked by trauma. She suffered tremendous abuse. Her mother struggled with drug addiction. Sidequa reflects, \u201cHow I got through that pain was I buried myself into school \u2014 school was my safe place.\u201d She excelled academically, graduating at the top of her high school class a year early. Her determination carried into adulthood. Sidequa served eight years in the Air Force Reserves, earned three bachelor\u2019s degrees and rose from front desk agent to hotel general manager in just three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Suddenly homeless<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But in 2025, everything changed. After building her hospitality career in Atlanta, Sidequa came back to New York City for a hotel assignment. She became ill from black mold exposure at the hotel, which was later shut down by the health department. While trying to secure temporary housing, she became the victim of a rental scam and was suddenly locked out \u2014 losing her clothes, belongings and sense of stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As her savings disappeared on short-term stays, Sidequa found herself with nowhere to go. She says, \u201cYou would never think that it can happen to you.\u201d She sought assistance from the Veterans Affairs office, who referred her to The Bowery Mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bowery.org\/updates\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/2603BEN_Matt11_1200.jpg\" alt=\"&quot;Come to me all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.&quot; Matthew 11:28\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Needed comfort<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sidequa arrived at our emergency shelter feeling tense. But her tension eased as she was greeted by staff with warmth, welcome and support. Sidequa later joined our Residential Program. She bonded with fellow clients and now sees them as family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reflecting on how the Mission helped her, Sidequa explains, \u201cI was stressed and in panic mode because of my situation. With the comfort I received here, I had the burden and weight lifted off my shoulders.\u201d The Mission also helped Sidequa to slow down. She says \u201cThey taught me so much about patience and to stop putting so much on me. They helped me set my pace and my goals.\u201d In this place of safety and encouragement, Sidequa was able to rebuild her life and renew her faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-style-large is-style-plain has-normal-font-size is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cEven though I wasn\u2019t home, it was feeling like a home here.\u201d \u2014 Sidequa<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A bright future<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, Sidequa is stepping into an exciting new chapter. She has accepted a two-year position as Regional Manager of Operations with a major hotel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And she has bigger dreams still ahead, including owning her own hotel someday and reaching out to help others the way she has been helped. \u201cI\u2019m going to be giving people second chances,\u201d she says. \u201cThose will be the ones I\u2019ll be looking at employing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:39px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-background\" style=\"background-color:#eaeaea\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">You can help others find a new life and hope<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sidequa first came to our Red Doors in need of safe shelter but found so much more. <a href=\"\/donate-online\/?c_src=B-Web&amp;c_src2=NU\">Your support<\/a> helps give people like Sidequa the opportunity to land on their feet again and to flourish.
