Enduring abuse in foster care, she ran away at fifteen. But by God\u2019s grace, she rose above her circumstances, always working while raising five children. She notes, \u201cSometimes as women, we have so much dignity in being a mother, we don\u2019t realize we need to be cared for too\u2026.I gave so much to others, that I didn\u2019t feel like I had value.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Cathy\u2019s husband died in 2018, she was crushed. She came to New York City to start over, but soon found herself without a home and sleeping outside in the middle of winter. Thankfully, she found support for her immediate needs and more at The Bowery Mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Receiving both emergency care and the promise of new life<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Though arriving embarrassed and ashamed, Cathy found a safe, welcoming and supportive community at The Bowery Mission\u2019s women\u2019s centers. \u201cThey offered me so many beautiful things I never had in my life,\u201d she says. \u201cThe food was so good. I didn\u2019t have to go hungry or sleep outside in the park. I didn\u2019t have to worry anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>God had placed a fighting spirit in Cathy and she was able to continue working through her challenges. She took significant steps towards independence. For the first time in her entire life, she developed a resume and created her own bank account. Cathy even enrolled in GED classes and she shares, \u201c[it] means the world to me, because all my kids got high school diplomas but it\u2019s something I was never able to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She started exercising and achieving health goals, attended Bible studies to deepen her faith and worked through the trauma of her past with her counselor. Today, she\u2019s achieved full-time employment and has saved up enough money to get her own apartment. Most of all, she has found healing from her past wounds and shame, looking forward with strength to her new life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.bowery.org\/updates\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/IMG_5333_crop-vertical_1200-682x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Cathy at computer\" class=\"wp-image-1220\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.bowery.org\/updates\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Katie-8_1200-crop-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Cathy with bike\" class=\"wp-image-1175\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cI had a big decision to make, letting go of my own understanding and my own answers. But God said, \u2018Come to me, lean on me so I can guide you. Let go and let me live in you. With gratitude, she shares, \u201cI\u2019m so happy. I can honestly say I am on my own again. I appreciate what God has done for me. I have keys to my own apartment, making baby steps again, living a life that I didn&#8217;t expect\u2026.I know that God has a purpose beyond the situation I overcame.
