The Bowery Mission Women's Center at Heartsease Home is a unique place of hope and healing for homeless women in New York City.
Opened in 2005, the Women’s Center has developed a structured 9-to-15 month program. Up to 20 women can participate in the program at one time, sharing bedrooms in a five-story brownstone. Our program respects each woman’s dignity and is built around three elements of life transformation:
Spiritual grounding: Our program starts with the fundamental questions of value – our beliefs, hopes and dreams. We long for each woman to see that she has an exciting future – that God loves her and has a purpose for her.
Economic empowerment: The Women’s Center offers an exciting mix of practical skill training at our on-site Career Center – high school equivalency training; computer, job search, and career training – so our graduates can secure good jobs and become financially independent.
Emotional equipping: Women come to the Women’s Center scarred by years – sometimes decades – of homelessness, depression, addiction and abuse. Through our Life Skills program, women are equipped to manage anger, heal relationships, set boundaries, and make good financial decisions. The residents also have opportunities to expand their horizons through activities such as gardening and painting.
