Kit’s hope story: “I’m grateful to be able to gather around the table with people I know.”

After a series of personal crises left her living in her car, Kit found refuge at The Bowery Mission

Kit has a vivid childhood memory: Walking with her mom in a crowded part of New York City, they were separated. She remembers the panic, crying out, not being able to find her mom. “Then, finally, she appeared and grabbed my hand,” she says.

That scene is almost a parable of Kit’s adult life — seasons of being lost and feeling alone, times of not knowing where to turn, until at last the hand of a loving God reached out and brought her to a haven of rest — here at The Bowery Mission.

With mounting challenges, she was in need of hope

Before everything fell apart, life was actually going well for Kit. She earned a bachelor’s degree with a double major in Management Information Systems and Finance, and she and her husband were reasonably well off. But then her marriage ended, and many challenges soon followed. Her bills and debt began to pile up, and Kit eventually lost her housing.

For a season, she was essentially homeless. Kit would stay in a timeshare, at a friend’s place or even in her car when need be. She struggled to make ends meet, working rideshare, delivery services and other gig jobs. Then, in 2023, she had three accidents — two in her car, one on her bike — that left her with serious injuries, high medical bills, and yet more debt. She was facing life on the streets when her sister recommended The Bowery Mission. She had volunteered at the Mission and knew Kit would be in good hands.

Meals, shelter and new hope

Here at the Mission, Kit received nutritious meals and safe shelter. This gave her a chance to rest, clear her head and stabilize. A short time later, she moved into our Women’s Center, which helps clients rebuild their lives, grow in faith and develop life skills that prepare them for a positive, self-sufficient future. She shares, “I’ve met quite a few people that are pretty awesome — some staff members and some that are staying here. I feel blessed.”

Kit especially enjoyed the job training program and career fairs. At the same time, she deeply appreciates the spiritual guidance. At the Mission, she has felt God holding her hand, leading the way. Looking towards a brighter future, Kit’s prayer mirrors Jesus’ words in Revelation 3:8: “I’ve asked God to open doors that no man can shut.”

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, Kit reflects on what she’s most grateful for since walking through our Red Doors: God’s love, kindness of neighbors like you and the daily fellowship she experiences at the Mission. By God’s grace through supportive community, she’s been blessed with a second chance.

“I’m grateful to be able to gather around the Thanksgiving table with people I know. I’m grateful that we have had our needs met, and that we have been transformed.” — Kit
