Mont Lawn Summer Camp Program
The flagship children program, Mont Lawn Camp's history stretches back to 1894, when we first invited 3,000 children from the Lower East Side slums for a week at Mont Lawn Camp. Today, over 1,000 of New York City's youth are bussed out to the Poconos of Pennsylvania for a week filled with fun, adventure, learning and growth. Every aspect of our programming is designed to help our youth:
- Appreciate and seek to emulate positive role models and turn away from negative ones.
- Grow to understand more about their strengths and abilities, and be more motivated to employ those strengths.
- Forge enduring positive peer relationships with other campers.
Our staff and summer counselors at Mont Lawn Camp work to instill these values in campers year after year. We believe that instilling these values at Mont Lawn combines with our other year-round programming to help at-risk youth achieve long-term outcomes: being connected to God, a caring adult, positive peer group, and quality education while crafting a plan for the future. Each summer in June The Bowery Mission busses over 1,000 at-risk youth from all over New York City to our sprawling 200 acre Mont Lawn Camp in the Poconos. Mont Lawn Camp provides each youth a week-long respite from the city in a safe place where kids can be kids. At Mont Lawn kids aged six to 12 can grow, learn, play and be challenged in ways they never imagined. Mont Lawn offers youth opportunities for adventure through camping trips, rope courses and climbing walls; creativity through our dance, arts & craft, and music programs; health and wellness through organic gardening and cooking classes; and opportunities for a new perspective on life through programs in Diebold Chapel and interaction with our summer counselors.
Mont Lawn Camp also offers unique opportunities for at-risk teenagers aged 13-18. Leadership Hill is our adventure-based, leadership development experience specifically for teenagers aged 13-16. We bring together 15-20 teenagers for 12 days to live in community for four gender-specific two-week sessions. Mont Lawn also offers the Counselors in Training (CIT) program for 16-17 year olds. Developed for young men and women who seek to grow into mature and responsible peer leaders, the CIT program trains ten to twelve 16-17 year olds as future Mont Lawn Camp summer staff.
Mont Lawn Camp is also the recruiting stage for our city-based programs, Mont Lawn City Camp and the Leadership Academy. Mont Lawn City Camp is hard at work to closely knit our programs together to work with the same kids year-round, ensuring a deeper impact on their long-term development.
The support of donors like you is helping Mont Lawn Camp shape youth of character, ability and confidence. Through the ongoing generosity of caring donors, we have increased camp attendance by an average of 13% while improving quality by lowering the camper/counselor ratio from 4:1. We have also added new programming such as organic gardening and a nutrition and cooking program called 'Little Chefs', along with a Frisbee golf course, expanded archery range, a duck pond and goat mountain, and additional elements to the climbing wall. Your online gift today to Mont Lawn Camp will provide at-risk youth with a unique and fulfilling opportunity.
